The flight was only £19.99 so off we went. Weird city, all the pavements and roads were either concave or convex. Potholes and lumps everywhere so pretty treacherous to walk at night. Fell over several times.
Our hostel was empty so very creepy but this obviously wasn't their fault as we were there off season. It was also next to a hospital so had a nice view of naked old ladies from our bedroom window. I don't know why they were naked.
Opposite an enormous tesco so got our food from there everyday. Not very exotic but so cheap, ate 3 meals a day for less than €5.
Days were spent wondering around depressing bleak streets caked in graffiti. Beautiful architecture squashed around huge communist slabs of buildings that dominate views. Houses that would be worth a fortune and protected by all sorts of laws in England are falling apart with boarded up windows and chained doors. I can't help feeling that it could easily be a stunning city but it just feels too sad to try.
Grey misty weather didn't help, can't deny that it felt like a horror movie setting.
Some amazing graffiti among the rubbish and really interesting photos of strange streets.
To be fair, the old town bit is quite nice because it's their main tourist area. Cobbled streets and souvenir shops make it like any other European city which is pretty but a bit boring.
Highlights were the graveyard we found ourselves in, very quiet and surprisingly not eerie and the blue church which suddenly appeared in a grey street like every other. A great cake of a building with smooth edges and frilly frosting looks like a smurf castle.
Spent a nice evening in a pretty little bar called la putika where we found some like minded (I say like minded but we didn't actually talk to them, they just dressed well) young people enjoying a pint for €1.30.
